Aidan’s Bedroom Renovation

When you are buying a house you have to decide what’s most important, for us it was useable land. One of the sacrifices that we had to make was bedroom size, all the rooms were tiny, even the master. This is the smallest room of them all, almost sized for an office rather than a bedroom. When picking rooms, thankfully there wasn’t a fight, Aidan claimed it right away. He likes that is was located the furthest from our bedroom.

Before renovations started the room was a total mess. It had the same horrible flooring that was in Andrew’s room, depressing paint color on the walls, and a name spray-painted on the door. Not to mention, the entire room flood during inspections. You read that right. A fire sprinkler had been cut behind the ceiling and not capped off, so when the inspector flipped a switch in the well house it turned on the old fire sprinkler system and flooded everything. We had to completely gut the room and start over.

I had new insulation and drywall installed. I was dead set on having smooth texture, and the bids I received to do it were much too high. We ended up spending an entire week doing it ourselves just to save some money. Then we added new baseboards, casing, and crown molding. We used Sherwin Williams alabaster white paint and a natural black slate floor. Aidan got started on decorating to his liking, and I helped him to organize his closet. This is always the hardest part for me, the designer in me wants to make the room magazine perfect, but it’s not my room. I know how important it is to have a space that is all your own, especially in your teen years.
