Winter Farm Update
Can you believe it's already December? This year really flew by. Buttercup gave birth to the cutest little steer this summer. We are calf-sharing, so she is allowed to feed and wean from her calf naturally, plus she still gives us 6 gallons of milk a day. We have been working with the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund to create contracts to start a herd share. Hopefully, everything will be done by the end of the year. We have been shopping for the perfect genetics to AI her with come January.
We downsized our goat herd this year, so we have more time to focus on other farm projects. Tilly and Freya are moving to greener pastures this week. Dexter went to be a herd sire for another local farm earlier this year. Lily and Athena are both confirmed pregnant and due in early March, so we will start drying them off this month. We decided to hold back on breeding Camellia until next fall, that way she has more time to grow into her adult body.
We took last year off of breeding pigs, but we finally bought a new boar. He came to us at eight weeks old, too young to breed, but he is now finally old enough to get the job done. We have him in now with two of our sows, so we are hoping for a bunch of cute little Mangalitsa piglets running around come spring.
We have always slowed downing breeding rabbits in the summer, but now that it's winter we have started our program back up. We currently have four standard rex and two New Zealand does. We’re also in the process of sourcing a couple more, and I’m really hoping to find a Harlequin.
Our winter garden is in full swing. We have been working on clearing and setting up new outside gardens for us to plant in come spring. We’re in the process of setting up the world's biggest Christmas tree in our greenhouse to help spread the holiday cheer. Pictures will be coming to all the relevant social sites soon.
Ok, I think that’s it for our farm update. Thanks for following along with our journey.
